Mental illness and understanding?

I don't think that there is any fool proof way to find out if you will have a mental illness or not, however it is true that you are more at risk genetically. It could very well be that maybe you have developed really good coping skills and will never really have much of a problem with mental illness in your life. It's actually a good that that you are aware that you may be at risk for it, this gives you the opportunity to look for symptoms or changes in your behaviour. If you notice anything, like you are starting to feel very low or you are plagued by constant worry go to your family doctor and tell them about it and that you have a family history of mental illness. You have the opportunity to catch it early if it does happen, which means it will be easier to treat and it won't have to have a strong impact on your life. I would also like to mention that shock therapy is very rare now and it is only resorted to if every other option is exhausted, and the patient consents, they are also put under general anaesthesia so they don't feel anything. I highly doubt that shock therapy is something that you need to worry about.
