University of California or California State University?

I'm a transfer student from a CA community college and I've been accepted to UC Irvine for this fall quarter for history. San Jose State seems like a nice school and it is closer to my hometown of SF. Besides prestige, will there be much of a difference between the two schools? How is the social scene in Irvine like?
